Editorial

Dear Golfers,

When paying Mallorca a visit during these last few weeks one needs not to worry about bad weather. While the sun is still hiding in large parts of Central and Northern Europe, early summer temperatures have already returned to the Island. Ideal conditions thus to swing our woods and irons. At the Golf Club Alcanada you´ll find best prerequisites, the course being in excellent condition and the ideal challenge for the game. Just recently the Spanish Golf Federation has rated our 18-hole slope even higher than its previous classification.

In this newsletter we shall introduce an interesting new gadget that can be purchased in our pro shop. Also we are presenting two jolly little quadrupeds which have belonged to the club for many years. And as always, we shall keep our fingers crossed for you in our great Alcanada Quizz. Participation is worth your while: Once again another two green fee packages for 2 people await their lucky winner.

We hope you enjoy reading as always and look forward to welcoming you in our club.

with best regards

New rating for course and slope at the Golf Club Alcanada

The Golf Club Alcanada has recently received new slope- and course-ratings. Our course has been evaluated a little more difficult than previously by the Spanish Golf Federation. The CR-measure is 73.2 for men (77 for women) and the slope now at 138 (139 for women).

Info: The course-rating measure (CR-measure) refers to the average number of strokes used by a “scratch” golfer (handicap at approximately 0) at normal conditions of the golf course and the weather. This figure may differ by several strokes from the par-measure, which for 18 holes is usually between 68 and 72. Tournament courses usually have a course-rating of 71 or 72.

To compare players who have acquired their handicap on a relatively easy course with players who have earned theirs on a relatively difficult course, courses have been given the slope rating. It expresses the difficulty of a golf course for the bogey golfer (handicap from -22,4 to -17,5) in relation to the difficulty for the scratch golfer.

It does not express the amount of strokes needed nor the difficulty of the course but only the relationship to the scratch golfer. This rating can differ from 55 up to 155.

Teamwork(er): Tom & Lula – A Dog’s Life on the Golf Course

First of all: To not disturb the sport along the course dogs are not allowed at the Golf Club Alcanada. The only exceptions are Tom and Lula, the two companions of our head green keeper Borja Azpilicueta. “Tom was here even before the club opened,” recalls Azpilicueta. The jolly male mongrel has come of age and is not interested any more in large rounds on the course. After an injury two years ago, he has a slight limp and therefore prefers to spend his time lying in a shady spot near the clubhouse.

Lula is quite different: the short-haired dog likes to accompany her owner on his excursions across the course. She has strayed into Azpilicueta´s life a few years ago to stay for good. One common feature shared by the two dogs with all the guests of Golf de Alcanada: here they really do feel at home!

From the Pro Shop: Garmin GPS-Clock “Approach S1” for 199 €!

Not a useless toy, but a useful gadget for golfers of all handicaps: This is the new GPS-Clock from Garmin, the “Approach S1”, which has recently become available in the pro shop of the Golf Club Alcanada. It combines a lightweight, flexible sports watch with a Golf-GPS-device. It can display distance information, measure individual shot distances and track the distance covered on the course.

With the “Approach S1” you can call on information for distances to the front, back and middle of the green just like a professional. The device also measures the exact distances for shots from anywhere on the court. For avid walkers the “Approach S1” also sports a mileage counter so that you know how far you have walked.

Pre-installed on the device are thousands of maps for golf courses all over Europe, including all island courses – and the maps will be continually updated. The use of the instrument is pleasantly simple.

Its Price: 199 € in the pro shop of Golf Club Alcanada.

Asparagus of the Spanish cuisine tastes delicious and has a long tradition! Try for yourself with this recipe from Ricardo Suarez, head of the golf club restaurant Alcanada. Or just order this wonderful dish in the weeks coming at our restaurant. For more information, call (0034) 971-54 59 44 or online at www.restaurantegolfalcanada.com.
